  1. “an update”: « un point »

Example sentence

“Let’s have an update on the marketing file at three pm.”

« Faisons un point sur le dossier marketing à 15h (quinze) heures. »

Breakdown

  • “let’s have” is « faisons ». Imperative.
  • “an update”: « un point »

“an update” is usually « une mise à jour » but when your boss summons you in their office for an update, the word is then « un point ».

Literally, a “dot (on the map)”, it’s a metaphor originating from sailing. “to have an update” is « faire un point ».

  • “a (physical) file”/“a case”: « un dossier »

Be careful: the translation is different in the digital world.

“a digital file” : « un fichier »

“a digital folder”: « un dossier »

  • “marketing ” is obviously « marketing »
  • “3 pm”: « 15 (quinze) heures »

This is a reminder of how the French clock works.

It’s a 24-hour clock. You may also say « three (trois) heures » since there’s no possible ambiguity.

Quick tip: “right now”

Here’s another way of saying “right now”/“ASAP” in a polite way: “at your earliest convenience” is « dans les plus brefs délais » (literally “in the briefest of delays”).
