French Sayings and metaphors to use in the work place.
“word of mouth”: « le bouche à oreille »
So, the French literally says “the mouth to ear”.
“zero tolerance”: « la tolérance zéro »
“by virtue of”: « en vertu de »
This is legal jargon.
“to strike while the iron is hot”: « battre le fer tant qu’il est chaud »
This is exactly the same image from blacksmithing, but the word order is slightly different.
“a vicious circle”: « un cercle vicieux »
“to be in the pipeline or in the works”: « être dans les tuyaux »
That means the task is being handled. The French literally says “it’s in the pipes”
“to bring a company to its knees”: « mettre une entreprise à genoux »
French for “your wish is my command”: « vos désirs sont des ordres »
The French says “your desires are orders”
“to zero in on something”: « se focaliser sur »
So, the English is originally a hunting saying.
But the French says “to focus on” simply, with no metaphor.
“to put (something) on the back burner”: « reléguer (quelque chose) au second plan »
So, the English has a cooking or stove metaphor.
The French has none and says “to push back to the background”: « reléguer au second plan ».
Let’s have some French sayings with their translations now.
« être sous l’eau »: “to be swamped”
Literally “to be underwater”. It’s a similar image.
« une boîte »
That’s a neutral slang term for “company.”
For example, « je travaille dans la même boite que mon père »: “I work in the same company as my father”.
« bosser »
That’s a neutral slang term « travailler ». For example, « je bosse dans cette boîte »: “I work in this company”.
« boulot »/« taf » are neutral slang terms for « travail ».
e.g. « j’ai un bon boulot »/« J’ai un bon taf »: “I have a good job”.
There is a verb version of « taf » which is « taffer ». It’s a first group verb.
It’s like « travailler »and it conjugates the same way.
« faire d’une pierre deux coups »: “to kill two birds with one stone”
« j’ai travaillé à la sueur de mon front »: “I worked my fingers to the bone”
The French literally says “my forehead was sweating from working”
« je m’ennuie comme un rat mort »: “it’s boring me to death”
« je démissionne »: “I quit”
