  1. “a product”: « un produit »

Example sentence in French Lesson Sales Productivity

“How many products does each salesman have?”

« De combien de produits chaque commercial dispose-t-il ? »

Breakdown

  • “How many?”: « Combien ? »

Note that “How much?” is also « Combien ? »

  • “a salesman”:  « un commercial »
  • “TO HAVE”: « DISPOSER DE ».  This is the formal version.

I could have just used « AVOIR »: « Combien de produits chaque commercial a-t-il ? ».

But here you are shown a different register of language. When you are speaking Business French it can be a nice thing to add some higher level language skills into your sentences from time to time. This will result in you getting noticed as a person who is really striving to learn French at a higher level.

French Lesson Quick tip : use formal English

If you want to sound more French, or if you’re looking for a good translation, go for formal/very formal English. It often won’t be as formal in French, it will be just perfect.

For example, “TO DISPOSE OF”, meaning “TO HAVE”, is very uncommon and very formal, even posh in English, but it’s just a bit formal in French. « De combien de produits chaque commercial dispose t-il »? is not too formal, perfect for a business context.

Be careful about the contraction « DISPOSER DE ». You have to use the preposition « de » before the items that you have, e.g. “the products”. And since it’s a question, you will place it at the beginning: « De combien ? ».
