How to Discuss Salary and Wages as Part of a French Lesson
“The variable component of wages often depends on skill.”
“a wage”: « un salaire »
« La part variable des salaires dépend souvent de la compétence. »
“the variable component”: « la part variable ». Literally “the variable part”.
“often”: « souvent »
“to depend on”: « dépendre de ».
Be careful with the proposition here. You might expect « dépendre sur » but it’s actually « de ».
This is a very common mistake with my clients when they speak French and try English or the other way around, they will often get the prepositions wrong.
Let’s conjugate « DEPENDRE DE »:
DEPENDRE DE (TO DEPEND ON): present
Je dépends (de): I depend (on)
Tu dépends (de): You depend (on)
Il/Elle dépend (de): He/She depends (on)
Nous dépendons (de): We depend (on)
Vous dépendez (de): You depend (on)
Ils/Elles dépendent (de): They depend (on)
This is a third group regular verb. Very useful as a reference.
“the skill”: « la compétence »
It’s easy to remember, it’s like “competency”.
Here is the full sentence again:
“The variable component of wages often depends on skill.”
« La part variable des salaires dépend souvent de la compétence. »
