Updating work on figures and how to express that in a sentence.

  1. “the figures”: “les chiffres”

Example sentence French Lesson Provide Updates

“The figures are bad this quarter, again.”

« Les chiffres sont de nouveau mauvais ce trimestre. »

Breakdown

  • “the figures”: “les chiffres”

Remember in Casino Royale, the villain was called « Le Chiffre » because he’s good with numbers. Well that’s it! « le chiffre » is “a digit”, « les chiffres »: the “the figures”.

  • “the quarter”: « le trimestre »
  • “bad”: « mauvais »

Again, as with all adjectives in French, don’t forget to match their gender and number with the gender number of the matching noun. « les chiffres » is masculine plural, so « mauvais » needs to be masculine plural. The feminine plural version would be « mauvaises ».

  • “again”: « de nouveau »/« à nouveau »

Free French Lessons Quick tip: Order of words

The order of words matters. When you say “the figures are bad this quarter again” you add something, you enhance an emotion like anger, “again”. You can also do this in French, but it will be rarer and stronger.

If you put it at the end, it becomes extremely emphasised.

e.g. « Les chiffres sont mauvais ce trimestre, à nouveau. » (written version)« Les chiffres sont mauvais ce trimestre, encore une fois. » (oral version)
