Mergers and Acquisitions: Useful French Lesson
Here it is: “mergers and acquisitions”: « les fusions acquisitions »
“Mergers and acquisitions is the busiest department in this consultancy firm.”
« La direction des fusions-acquisitions est la plus active de cette agence de conseil. »
French Lesson Quick tip: M&A slang
Here is a slang term for you. “M&A”: « FUSACQ » (noun), e.g. « La direction des fusacq ».
You may also use “M&A” in French as an acronym, in big international consultancy firms.
“busy”: « actif » or « occupé »
In this case « actif » is better. It’s an adjective, so be careful to match it in gender and number with its noun.
“the busiest”: « la plus active »
So It’s also an adjective in the end, so « la plus active », because the noun it’s matched with is « la direction » (feminine).
“in this consultancy firm”: « de cette agence de conseil »
And like in English, you could say “the business department of this consultancy firm”.
But it’s more common and more elegant to say “in this consultancy firm”.
So be careful, sometimes the generic translations of prepositions don’t apply.
“a consultancy firm”/“consulting firm”: « une agence de conseil »/« une agence de consulting » (if in an international business context).
Here is the full sentence again:
“Mergers and acquisitions is the busiest department in this consultancy firm.”
« La direction des fusions-acquisitions est la plus active de cette agence de conseil. »
