  1. “an advertisement”: « une annonce »

Example sentence

“Can you put out the advertisement for the HR officer position today?”

« Pouvez-vous publier l’annonce pour le poste de responsable RH aujourd’hui ? »

Breakdown

  • “CAN” is translated as « POUVOIR »

“CAN” is a modal verb in English, which is very specific. It modifies a verb, and it can only be used with another verb. The French « POUVOIR » can be a standalone verb. But it works just the same.

e.g. “I can do this”: « je peux faire ça ». “CAN” is the conjugated verb, “DO” is in the infinitive. Same thing in French, « peux » is conjugated, « FAIRE » is in the infinitive.

  • “TO PUT OUT”: « PUBLIER »

This is yet another example of a prepositional verb in English. It’s a vivid image that is rendered in French with a concept: « PUBLIER »: “TO PUBLISH”/“TO MAKE PUBLIC”.

  • “HR officer”: « responsable RH »

Again, we see that someone who is in charge of something is responsible for it, « responsable RH ».

  • “a position”: « un poste »

Quick tip: “an advertisement”

When you’re advertising for a product or a service, “an advertisement” is « une publicité ». “an ad” (short for advertisement) is « une pub ».
