French Lesson Goal Setting

French Lesson Goal Setting

French Lesson Goal Setting is the objective of Chapter 47 from this free French Lesson Course for Business Confidence

In this chapter you will learn to talk about short and long term goals.

“to achieve”: « atteindre »

“Our short term goals need to be achieved before envisioning any long term solution.”

« Nos objectifs à court terme doivent être atteints avant d’envisager une solution à long terme. »

Quick tip: quasi-homonyms

Don’t mix up « atteindre » (“to achieve”) with « attendre » (“to wait”).

“a goal”: « un objectif »

“a long term solution”: « une solution à long terme »

We could have  removed the preposition « à »: “une solution long terme”

Same with “short term”: « court terme ».

“before”, “before doing something”: « avant de »

In English the syntax is “before” + verb in -ing form, e.g. “before envisioning”.

In French you do « avant de » + verb in the infinitive, e.g. « avant d’envisager ».

The Verb Envisager and its Conjugations

Then we have “to envision”: « envisager ».

You can also say “to consider” in English. But “to envision” is a bit more formal than « envisager » in French.

“to consider”: « envisager »

French Grammar False friend alert!

« considérer » is not “to consider”.

« considérer » has less intensity, it’s neutral, it’s like “to think”

e.g. “I think this is good”: « je considère que c’est bon ».

“a solution” is just une « solution ».

French Lesson Goal Setting Quick tip: Buying time in conversation, as you prepare your thoughts.

When you are having a conversation and you’re struggling or you need to buy time.

Just list the different points or list the different steps.

For example, you will say “the first step is”: « la première étape est de » or “the first thing: « la première chose » or “the first level”: « premier niveau » and so on.

This will help you buy time and your listeners will be more patient, you will catch their attention.

Go slow, remember, build small sentences.

Here is the full sentence again:

“Our short term goals need to be achieved before envisioning any long term solution.”

« Nos objectifs à court terme doivent être atteints avant d’envisager une solution à long terme. »
