Asking Questions in French

“We’ve run out of paper for the printer, do you know where the spare is kept?”

“to run out”: « ne plus avoir de »

« On n’a plus de pour l’imprimante, sais-tu où se trouvent les réserves ? »

“we”: « on »

Remember this is the informal “we”. The formal “we” is « nous ».

Since this is a very informal situation in the office, I chose the informal « on ».

“paper”: « le papier »

Like in English, you can say “papers” when you mean documents, « des papiers ».

e.g. « Vos papiers, s’il vous plaît. ».

“a printer”: « une imprimante »

“to know”: « savoir »

Conjugating the Verb Savoir

Let’s conjugate it. It’s a third group verb, pretty irregular.

SAVOIR (TO KNOW): present

Je sais: I know

Tu sais: You know

Il/Elle sait: He/She knows

Nous savons: We know

Vous savez: You know

Ils/Elles savent: They know

“the spare”: « les réserves »

Literally “the reserves”, as in “the stocks”.

“kept”: « se trouvent »

So in English, the passive voice is used here, “the spare is kept”.

That is rendered in French with a pronominal verb, « se trouver ».

« les réserves se trouvent » as in “can be found” or “are found”.

Since it’s a question, we inverted the subject and the verb. Instead of « tu sais », we have « sais-tu ».

Let’s hear the full sentence again:

“We’ve run out of paper for the printer, do you know where the spare is kept?”

« On n’a plus de pour l’imprimante, sais-tu où se trouvent les réserves ? ».
